When I was a small, Latin American child growing up in the US, I was completely and utterly obsessed with Shakira. Not only did I want to be able to move my belly like hers, I wanted a big head of curly hair. My hair was black and pin-straight, but I didn't lose hope. I prayed and prayed, and at some point after puberty hit, my hair changed. It didn't quite get to Shakira level, but it became very wavy. Unfortunately, I spent the next 10 years clamping every strand under the burning heat of an iron. I came to my senses in my twenties, and I'm still on my curly-girl journey, trying to figure out the best routine to bring out all the waves.
In our story today, a confident girl with curls is told to do something different with her hair for her boyfriend's mom's birthday. Mom demands that she make more of an effort to look "presentable." She doesn't leave much to read between the lines, huh?
